Get to Know NUS at UCLA

NUS is an entirely student-run club for current undergraduate UCLA students who are interested in Neuroscience. Although a majority of our members are Neuroscience majors, students of any major may join ðŸ˜„

Our events vary slightly every year with each new NUS Board and depend on the club's dynamic interests. Typical NUS activities include the following:

 

1. Professor Luncheons 

   -with Neuroscience, Physiological Science, and Psychology faculty

2. Lab Placement Fairs

   -find a research position! 

3. Career and Graduate Student Panels

   -don't know what to do with a Neuroscience major? 

4. Themed- Symposiums

   -learn about the brain with guest professional speakers

5. NeuroNights

   -5-star fine dining/casual networking with Neuroscience faculty

6. Volunteering

   -make a difference to the community during Brain Awareness Week

7. Presenting Student Research

   -share your research at the Annual Science Poster Day (early Spring)

8. Celebrating NS 198/199 Research

   -done for the poster? Celebrate at Neuroscience Poster Day (late Spring)

9. Socials

   -movie nights, trivia nights, hikes, scavenger hunts etc OPEN FOR REQUEST

10. Study-Buddy Program

   -stuck on questions at the night before the exam? Study Buddy got you back! 

11. Mentor-Mentee- Program

   -find a mentor/mentee/best friends by developing a long-term relationship 

12. Professor Recognition Night

   -choose your favorite Neuroscience professor of the year!

13. Are You Smarter than a College Student? (AYSTACS)

   -compete against Neuroscience professors in trivia gameplay

How to Become a Member:

 

Step 1:  Fill out a membership application
Fill out the GoogleDoc (click the button below). You will also pay a ONE TIME membership fee of $20 that you will Venmo following the directions on the application, or by handing $20 to any of our current board members at meeting.
Note: For the duration of remote learning, the ONE TIME membership fee will only be $10.
 
Step 2:  Come to our general events
If you join the mailing list, you will get e-mails about the dates and locations. Also, check our NUS BULLETIN on the "Home" page and our "Calendar" page to see what events are scheduled for this quarter.

 

Step 3:  To be recognized as an active NUS member, you must 
1) Pay the ONE TIME membership fee
2) Attend (and make sure to sign in at!) a total of 10 events throughout your time in NUS (General Meetings count!)
3) Cast your vote for Professor Recognition Night
 
We hope that you will stay with us long-term and eventually interview to become an NUS Officer yourself. So come network with peers who share your interests, get to know professors personally, talk about career options, get involved in the community, and have fun socializing with us. Q1: HOW CAN I CHECK MY MEMBERSHIP STATUS?

You may check your membership status by contacting our current Member Outreach Directors, Andrew Swenson or Anish Natarajan. They are the primary contact for everything related to payment of dues, event attendance, and cord eligibility.

 

Q2: WHEN IS THE NEXT GENERAL MEETING?

Dates and locations of upcoming NUS events are listed on the "HOME" page under "NUS BULLETIN" as well as on the "CALENDAR" page.  Also, check your personal e-mails that is sent by NUS Executive Board for important information! Emails sent through our list serve sometimes end up in your spam folder, so please check there (and mark not spam!) to stay updated. Facebook is another good way to stay informed about upcoming events and opportunities.

Q3: IS IT TOO LATE TO JOIN?

No, it's not! New applications are accepted at any time. However, applications received after Week 8 of any given quarter will not count until the following quarter. Please keep in mind that you must attend at least 10 events throughout your time in NUS to receive special cords at graduation. Therefore, if you are a graduating student, then you should join NUS no later than Fall Quarter of your last year at UCLA. These cords signify that the students garnering them have taken part in extra academic and social events that their major organization offers.

 

Q4: WHAT IF I CAN'T MAKE IT TO EVENTS; ARE THERE ANY ALTERNATE ACTIVITIES?

You receive credit for attending ANY NUS event. We offer many events throughout every quarter on different days of the week and at different times of the day. If you can't make it out to 3 NUS events/quarter here are some other events you can do to earn NUS credit. Please submit one paragraph description of your experience or 3 pictures (at least one must have you in it!) at the event.
